Stephanie Honey and Sarah Paterson first worked together on trade policy and trade law issues at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Their subsequent careers have taken them in different directions in the world of trade and business. Stephanie and Sarah today collaborate to provide accessible, practical trade policy education to government and private-sector clients, in New Zealand and around the world, drawing on decades of combined, practical experience.

Our Experts
Stephanie Honey
Stephanie Honey draws on long experience in the public and private sectors, including serving as New Zealand’s chief agriculture negotiator in the WTO Doha Round, as senior New Zealand diplomat working on the bilateral relationship with Australia and as a trade negotiator in Brussels working on EU trade issues. Stephanie’s interests include digital trade and services; regional economic integration (especially in the Asia-Pacific); free trade agreements and the World Trade Organisation; food and agriculture trade, non-tariff barriers and how to make trade more inclusive, including for women and small businesses. Stephanie is the lead policy advisor to the New Zealand members of the APEC Business Advisory Council in addition to her consulting business. She has worked on trade policy and strategy in both the New Zealand dairy and red meat sectors, was formerly the Associate Director of the New Zealand International Business Forum, and sits on the New Zealand Horticulture Export Authority Board and on the Advisory Board of the Centres for Asia-Pacific Excellence. She also served on the Executive Board of the TradeExperettes, a social enterprise that champions the voices of women trade experts globally.
Sarah Paterson
Sarah Paterson led Fonterra’s Trade Strategy team and spent four years based in Europe for Fonterra covering European dairy policy and multilateral trade and economic matters, including the Doha Round. Sarah also led trade strategy for Meat & Wool NZ. She was a senior legal adviser in MFAT prior to her industry roles. With over 20 years’ experience working in government and industry, Sarah has a thorough knowledge of the legal, policy and political issues related to international relations, and agricultural policy, as well as the commercial and business impacts of trade policy for two of New Zealand’s most significant export sectors.
